THE AGRARIAN based Philippine economy has produced cultural forms and art expressions definitive to it. Rice being the principal crop is the central focus in rituals of propitiation and in celebrations characterized by feasts, dances and music.

Performance by the basal gong ensemble of the Pala'wan of Palawan animates the gathering of the tambilaw and the tinapay rituals performed to propitiate the Ampo't Paray or the Rice God. The Yakan of Basilan play the kwintangan kayu. The music is meant to woo the newly planted rice to grow robust and bear grains with abundance.

Rice harvest is always the most awaited period and festive rituals of gratitude to the gods are held immediately after harvest.

The kutyapi a two-stringed plucked lute of the Magindanao, provides vibrant tones to celebrate a bountiful harvest. From the fields, the harvested rice are taken to the house of the owner where neighbors are invited to a kanduli a night-long revelry. At the center of the celebration is the kutyapi master playing the dinalayday, patatik. and dinalig to the delight of the guests.
